Mush Records seems to be on a new bent at the moment serving up a fusion of hip-hop meets post rave electronica. Corduroi is close to this description, with beat structures being strongly influenced by hip-hop and freely using cut and paste techniques, slap beats, reverse samples and so on. Then, Corduroi fuses the sounds with high tone synth dystopias, strong hi-hat lead beats, punchy bass and rather wonky melody lines. The vocal samples included are rather chopped up and effected and the overall feel is a louche funk. The standout track, ‘All ways‘, weaves finger-clicking with warped sounds, chipmunk effected vocal samples, and an insistent bright soundscape that opens with faux field recording ambience. Then there is the quiet guitar sample, kick and click of ‘Like gentle giants’ which weaves a quiet pattern into a slow floor track with melodic breaks and slightly warped modulations. The skittish ‘Monk’s muse‘ has that raved-up insistence melded with hip-hop in quite a frenzied simplicity. ‘Bangarangaran‘ uses its samples well to build up a call-and-response sample style that melds with a playful and simple melodic keyboard before the distortions take hold. Final track ‘My Dear‘ is more of a synth, four on the floor number with a stripped down minimal template and few of the hip-hop elements. - Cyclic Defrost |
