The title of this four-song EP, as well as those of the songs ("Media Mom Saves the Day," "Petroleum Jel"), obviously reveals the edges of Jel's sociopolitical ideology. More than the message, though, it's the music that stands out on this release. Specifically, it's the drums. Jel's real talent is working with beats and drum sounds. He possesses an innate ability to construct pieces that employ multiple drum tracks with differing but complimentary tones and tempos, and much of his music has a depth that almost breathes on its own. The "Meat" side of the EP is mostly slow, fuzzy and almost dirge-y, but there's a whole world of percussive life happening just under the surface of each of the side's two tracks. The music on the "Oil" side is more unpredictable, lively; slightly more hook-oriented and, like all Jel music, rhythmically rich. - Synthesis |
