It’s that West Coast beat maestro Daedelus again teamed up with MF Doom on "Impeding Doom." The Ninja Tune crew are probably after a little reflected glory from MF Doom’s recent highly praised appearances as part of Dangerdoom and with Gorillaz (Damon Albarn’s project that also featured Shaun Ryder, Denis Hopper and Ninja’s award winning Roots Manuva). Check the accapella for whatever the Doom man is ranting on about here but the idea of MF Doom and a 1940’s movie string backing still takes some ear adjustment. Taken from the album Exquisite Corpse, "Impending Doom" and "Just Briefly" are arguable the most accessible tracks. "Just Briefly" is all Daedelus and it’s just awesomely good. Possibly in 30 years time, it’ll be regarded as the beats cut-up equivalent of the Buzzcocks’ "Ever Fallen In Love." You never know, "Just Briefly" may even get a charity remake in due course but, in the meantime, don’t miss out on the original and this new Umod remix. As much as I’m a fan of Domu, I did fear for the remixes. What’s the point? How could the originals be bettered? Well the idea of remixing "Just Briefly" was just making me nervous. I need not have worried, with Domu putting on his Umod hat on he’s taken it downtempo. Hey! I don’t recall Enter The Umod being like this. Half bruk, half disco and at the same time dark ‘n’ moody with light strings and twinkle keys. It’s a strange one but enthralling and necessary. And to top it off, in full Domu attack, "Impending Doom" is more overtly broken beat trade mark. But like I said about the recent album Return of the Rogue, this is grown up broken with a maturity - dare I say, less ‘obvious’ than the forthcoming Bugz In The Attic new single. At a time when all the talk is of partnerships, Daedelus and Domu are a match for all independently-minded music lovers. Brilliant start of a union of two experts in forward thinking beats and hopefully a ‘proper’ collaboration can be arranged by those good folks at Ninja Tune in the future. - Fly |
