This album is a true wonder and is booting back the envelope of possibilities in sound by a good few notches. Boom Bip is the producer with the vast record collection, sampler, and wayward imagination, whilst Doseone is, put simply, the most original rap voice in years. Doseone is the shit for three reasons: voice (on helium); delivery (playful); and technique (ranging from the hyper abstract to charming to pure check-the-technique velocity). Which goes some small way to detailing the treasures on offer here. While you could call it a hip-hop album in that it's got a man chatting rhythmically over it, it's so much more. Like all great innovative music, it's impossible to frame in mere words, but if you were to demand a description you could say it's the moment before death when your whole life flashes through your mind's eye in a glorious tapestry of thoughts, feelings, memories, and emotions. It evokes times and places you've experienced and also some you haven't. Colossal new music. - The Crack |
