Teeel is Jim Smith, a New Jersey based electronic producer, songwriter and vocalist who crafts music as meticulous, emotive, and big sounding as anything that came from the New Order led heyday of synth-pop. Originally recording using the traditional one-man in room of synths (his happens to be 10'x10' and painted teal) approach perfected by pioneers Gary Numan, Howard Jones, and Thomas Dolby, Teeel's debut, Amulet and follow-up, University Heights have built a stellar reputation among fans of electronic music and chill-wavers alike. With his third album, and Mush debut, Hydrostatic, Teeel has for the first time incorporated others into his recordings, most importantly the guitar work of Stephen Chladnicek, who now also accompanies Teeel for live performances. Along with contemporaries Neon indian, Toro Y Moi, and Brothertiger, Teeel is creating music that does not simply emulate his well-known influences, but instead uses them to create his own unique and instantly recognizable take on synthesized based dance-pop.
