"Letter To A Friend" is the dramatic single sourced from Pregnant’s Mush debut, Life Hard : I Try. Seeming longer and more expansive than its three minute run time, the song is a sonically rich story of an isolated member of the witness protection program risking exposure by sneaking off to mail a letter to someone from his lost life. The sauntering drum machine, woozy vocals, and harp strums create a dreamlike vibe that is perfectly captured in the song’s video, directed by Terroreyes.tv’s wunderkind Sean Stout. Raleigh Moncrief, whose production work includes sound design on The Dirty Projectors’ Bitte Orca in addition to his own cutting edge originals, presents a stark mix of “Letter To A Friend” by removing the harp flourishes and burying the track in a sea of reverb and vintage synth and drum machine blips. Lou Breed - who has gained acclaim for the noisy Stoned Out: Miami Beach - and indie-favorites Javelin take on two additional tracks from the full-length. Breed’s take on "Higher Ground" is a slow-building and ethereal work, using the original track's vocals as just another instrument in a sonic wave. On their version of "Another Day," Javelin maintains all of the subdued songwriting strength of the original without sacrificing the off-kilter kitchen-sink style for which the duo has become known. The single is a perfect companion piece to the already-impressive Life Hard : I Try.
