| At a time when the Kooks and the Fratellis pass for "alternative rock," you can hardly blame bands for blatantly delving back into the post-punk murk for creative inspiration. At the The Magnificents' appetite for early 1980s revivalism goes beyond the regulation ripping-off of Joy Division. Moving on from the frenetic synth-punk of their debut, this Edinburgh outfit open their second album by brazenly referencing the dark electronica of Simple Minds' pre-stadium era. Their good tastes extends to Krautrock, the gonzo punk of Subway Sect and the rabble-rousing of the Skids. - The Scotsman |
