J. Cru's cut-and-paste instrumental hip-hop EP, Freestyles is a throwback to the style of early Mo' Wax. The four track EP opens with "Lady In The Mist," a moody instrumental that breaks into a wicked slide bass groove with floating vocal samples. "Static" and "The Mack" hold steady uptempo beats with intricate scratching and catchy hooks. "Reptile" ends the album with experimental tones, sirens, and breaks. J. Cru's samples are crisp, the sequencing is straight forward, and the EP never takes itself too seriously, opting for the rump-shake over the brain-tease. Freestyles succeeds in providing the perfect cheep thrill for any midtempo or scratch DJ set.
